Types of Lava

Aa Lava: This type of pours out very quickly. When it hardens, it turns into jagged pieces.

Pahoehoe Lava: It flows slowly out of the vent. It has a glassy surface after it hardens.

Pillow Lava: It always forms underwater. When it hardens, it has rounded lumps.

Blocky Lava: This type of lava is cool and stiff when hardened. When it is in the liquid state, it dosen't travel far from the vent.

Pyroclastic Material

Volcanic Bombs: These are blobs of magma that harden in the air.

Lapili: Lapili means "little stones" in Italian. They are formed when lava hardens right before it hits the ground.

Volcanic Ash: Formed when magma gas bubbles pop. It makes up the most pyroclastic material that comes out of a volcano.

Volcanic Blocks: These are the biggest type of pyroclastic material. Unlike other pyroclastic material, volcanic blocks are solid before they are erupted.
